— Tell us, what were you doing before you came to the courses at TeachMeSkills?
— A lot of things. At university, I studied at the history department, and by profession I am a history teacher. But already during the course of my studies, I And I have worked in sales for the last 8 years — in a home appliances and electronics store.
— Why did you decide to change the field? Did someone inspire you or did you think about it before?
— Initially, I thought that this kind of work (sales) is not forever. I did not understand what I really wanted to do. Some time was spent on the fact that I did not believe in my own strength, that I social media marketing service could do it. But in the end, yes, there was a person who told me, go ahead, try, why not?
And I started studying something. At first, on my own, and then I realized that I needed to systematize this knowledge and look for some courses.
I probably wanted to go into something related to IT since school, but then I did not believe in myself at all and went a different way. Then I thought about it too, but not seriously. And yes, there was a person who simply told me, why not. We became friends by chance, he works as a programmer. I said that I was
- At first there were other courses, but they somehow ended abruptly. They consisted of several parts: the first part was over (it was very short, and I can't say that it gave much knowledge), and there was a separate recruitment for the next part, and it somehow dragged on. I thought that there was no point in waiting, and started looking for something else.
— Why did you choose Java?
— It was a coincidence. Firstly, there were a lot of courses on Java, and secondly, I was studying the issue of programming languages, and everywhere regarding testing, Java was listed at the top as the most popular.
— It was definitely not the easiest choice. Was the training easy? Did you study anything on your own?
— In fact, it was hard at first. It seemed to me that I couldn’t handle it, that I wouldn’t figure it out. I didn’t understand some simple things. By the time of TeachMeSkills, I wouldn’t say that I knew Java well. Let’s say, the very basics, mediocre. But already at TeachMeSkills, everything went smoothly, like clockwork.
— Did you manage to get a job right away or were there any difficulties? How many interviews were there?
— There were two interviews, and one of them was before I even finished my studies. There, recruiters from TeachMeSkills were already sending out recommendations to companies. And the second interview was literally the same week that I finished the course. Specifically, we defended our theses on Tuesday — the interview was on Friday. And I was hired right away, less than a week had passed.
— Did reality and expectations about the job match? You practically do something on the courses, but what about real projects?
— In fact, reality even exceeded expectations in some places. In general, they told me that this is probably some kind of monotonous work, maybe you will get bored. But in fact, no, it is never boring. There is always something new, something interesting. And does it depend on the projects or the team? How did the relationships in the team work out for you? — I've gotten used to it now, but at first it was very surprising that in IT they always treat you so well, even if you screwed up somewhere. No one scolds you there, no one shames you. In other areas where I worked before, everything is completely different. I was impressed that absolutely everyone here is nice, responsive, good people.
